Doom II: Hell On Earth (DII:HOE).
Doom II: Hell on Earth: You will never, ever need another PC game again by ME!!! 10/10
Many shoot-'em-up games are along the same line. Simplistic story, flashy graphics, linear levels, and often rubbish handling.
Doom II takes all the records of shoot-'em-ups being simplistic, over flashy, linear and rubbish, throws 'em in the fire, take out a Super Combat Shotgun, blasts 'em in the face till their bleeding, takes 'em out of the fire, throws 'em out the window, jumps up and down on 'em and then BFG9000's them to Deimos, where Demons and Imps are ready to rip 'em to shreds. Yes, it's THAT good.
The levels are better designed then the original Doom, so while complex and set out so that you might need to take a while to find everything, isn't confusing, claustrophobic or overwhelming at ANY time through the whole game, in my opinion the only game EVER to do so. The weapons are original, have some spectacular graphics and amazing sound effects. The enemies are also original, intelligent, tough and will need more thinking over to defeat then just the normal 'Run out guns ablazing and hoping that 1 out of 15 bullets hit them while they're tearing you apart' routine I see in just TOO many games.
Give me any shoot-'em-up, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Half Life, Resident Evil, anything, and I'll lock 'em in a room with DII:HOE with only a shotgun apiece with 5 shells in it, and watch with glee as DII:HOE throws it away, gets a Beserk Pack and rips the opposition to pieces with it's bare hands. Half Life: Take note. You have been beaten.
Pros: The fantasticly laid out levels, the original concepts and the amazing gameplay
Cons: Not enough secret levels
Greatest Gaming Moment:
The beggining of Level 20, "GOTCHA" as you're pit in a room with a Cyberdemon (all ready hard), A Spider Mastermind (Prepare to part with your hair) and about 20 Imps (Prepare to part with your sanity). The most challanging piece of gaming ever. I have never pushed myself so far then by using my brain to think of strategies, my fingers to fire, and my wits.
Time Played: 100+ hours

Doom
This game is, aside from WOLFENSTIEN 3D (A game by ID software, creators of the Doom saga, the Quake trillogy, and many other great games. This game portraed the Nazis as robotic evil, er, robots. it was the first 3D shoot 'em up) reveloutionised shoot 'em ups as we know it. There would be know Goldeneye, no Perfect Dark, no Half Life, no Resident Evil, no NOTHING if it weren't for DOOM (and WOFENSTIEN 3D, of course). For the story, read the paragraph about DII:HOE

Remember, this site is about DII:HOE, not DOOM. It just a reminder that if it weren't for DOOM, there would be no DII:HOE, so I felt inclined just to write a bit about it. It deserves it, after all. Yours Truly, Gur Samuel
